HUD Allots $1.4 Million in Federal Grants to Provide Permanent Housing to People with AIDS

How do you provide aid to someone who has AIDS?

Given the nature of AIDS, assistance and support are very important for as long as a vaccine is not available yet. One can provide moral support, but it won’t solve some of their pressing problems like getting enough medical treatment and finding a permanent home where they can stay while undergoing therapy.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is addressing the latter concern by giving people with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles a chance to get permanent housing through a $1.4 million grant, according to Secretary Steve Preston in a recent announcement.

Permanent housing will play an important role in the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families who are not earning enough to cover monthly expenses. It’s bad enough that they have to deal with a life-threatening disease to be burdened further with not having a stable home. The federal grant will take away their housing worries, giving them more time to focus on getting the proper treatment.

The Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS Program or HOPWA will provide the million-dollar grant to the City of Los Angeles Housing Department. Secretary Preston compares the housing grant to a lifeline for those people undergoing therapies while trying to find a decent home.

"Working closely with the City of Los Angeles' Housing Department, we can offer these families the support they need to concentrate on staying healthy instead of worrying how they'll pay next month's rent," he says.

You can expect to hear of more government grants from the HUD because HOPWA has a total of $19.4 million to give out to 18 local programs all over the country. These funds will definitely play an important role in the lives of those low-income individuals or families who have to deal with expensive drug therapies. A permanent home will allow them to concentrate more on their health.
